1 in 7 American adults are impacted by kidney disease.
The month of March is recognized as National Kidney Month and serves as a way to not only bring awareness to health issues like kidney disease and encouraging others to take charge of their health.
“Kidney disease is known as a silent killer due to the fact that as many as 9 in 10 people living with the condition are unaware that they have it and do not have symptoms until the later stages,” according to the American Kidney Fund.
Let’s dig deeper into this topic and how you can spread awareness during National Kidney Month!
1. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK)
During National Kidney Month, the NIDDK has provided several resources, including a list of healthy lifestyle habits to take charge of your kidney health.
Additionally, the NIDDK provides a National Kidney Month 2025 Toolkit consisting of flyers, social media graphics, educational videos, guides, and other resources that can help with managing chronic kidney disease.
“Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help you manage CKD and its complications from progressing,” according to the NIDDK.
2. The National Kidney Foundation
The National Kidney Foundation provides a plethora of information related to kidney health including:
- Clinical trial research and opportunities
- Healthcare resources
- Information on transplants
- Ways to access kidney health
- Tools for dieting and nutrition
- Educational resources for professionals
The foundation offers a quiz to assess kidney health and provides information for advocates and volunteers.
Additionally, the National Kidney Foundation has their website and resources available in Spanish, which can be accessed here.
3. The American Kidney Fund (AKD)
The American Kidney Fund will kick off Kidney Action Week, a free online conference that focuses on prevention and management of chronic kidney disease and facilitates connections with leading experts and patient advocates within the kidney community.
Kidney Action Week will take place from March 7-10, 2025, and those interested in participating can register here.
“Kidney Action Week brings together people living with kidney disease, nephrologists, renal dietitians, caregivers and other kidney experts to take part in a series of interactive presentations and discussions on rare kidney disease, kidney disease prevention and management, dialysis, transplant and organ donation, clinical research and other kidney-related topics,” according to the AKD.
Additional resources are available through AKD including the Rare Kidney Disease Action Network and Know Your Kidneys.
